How to use Mendeley for beginners

Hello everyone, welcome back to my blog! In this semester 4 there is a school project named RBL (Research Based Learning) which requires reading and referencing primary sources of research and literature. The process of referencing can be a nightmare if done by hand, but it can be relatively simple and straight-forward when taking advantage of certain applications.

One application that is often used, especially for academics, students and lecturers, is Mendeley. Some of the advantages that can be obtained from using this application are easy installation and use, and of course it's free. Well, in this video I'll show you the steps for beginners in operating this application (I use the Windows operating system). I hope it helps for your RBL work :)

1. First thing first download the Mendeley application by type “Mendeley” onto google or your search engine and click on the “download” hyperlink:

2. After download the application from the internet, open Mendeley desktop setup. A pop up will appears on your windows monitor, just follow the instruction it'll eventually allow you to install the application.

3. If you don't have an account you must first register an email address and password for this application. If you already have an account just sign in.

4. To connect Mendeley with MS Word that we will use then, click the tools menu and click install MS Word plugin.

5. Make sure before this step you don't open any MS Word files.

6. Click ok then the Mendeley will automatically be installed on MS Word. Open it and the display will appear like this.

7. Make sure you have a pdf file from a journal or article that we will reference.

8. To sorting the file, create a folder by clicking create folder. For example you are going to work on Research Based Learning (RBL) then name the folder with Research Based Learning.

9. Drag the file to the Mendeley application

10. Make sure the data is correct for each file. For example, click two times of the file, then the pdf display will appear in the next window. Well, again make sure the title, author, journal name, year, page in the right hand column, is accordance with the journal we are referring to. If it's not then you need to edit it manually.

11. Select the citation style that we will use click view < citation style. Select one.

12. When writing and you want insert the citation, then in the menu MS Word click references > insert citation.

13. Type in the keyword, it can be the name of the author of the title or the article, then click ok.

14. To create a bibliography click insert bibliography.
